Un serpent discret mais fascinant, relativement commun dans les forêts humides et marécageuses de Guyane.
🌿 Ce colubridé est un spécialiste : il est exclusivement malacophage, autrement dit, son régime se compose uniquement de gastéropodes, notamment des escargots. Un exemple parfait d’adaptation écologique !
🐍 Les juvéniles arborent souvent une teinte plus sombre, avec une tête marquée de motifs jaunes distinctifs. En grandissant, les adultes prennent une robe brun clair à brun foncé. Certains individus sont même si sombres qu'ils semblent presque mélaniques.

A discreet yet fascinating snake, relatively common in the humid forests and swamps of French Guiana.
🌿 This colubrid is a true specialist: it is exclusively malacophagous, meaning its diet consists solely of gastropods — especially snails. A perfect example of ecological adaptation!
🐍 Juveniles are often darker in color, with a head marked by distinctive yellow patterns. As they grow, adults develop a light to dark brown coloration. Some individuals are so dark they appear almost melanistic.

Rana vaquita
La "rana vaquita" (Edalorhina perezi), cette grenouille aux longs « cils » a un corps très curieux. Son ventre est lisse avec des taches noires et blanches (comme une vache, d’où son nom commun), bien qu’elle ait aussi un peu de jaune dans les aines. Son dos est aplati, beaucoup moins lisse que le ventre, et adopte principalement des teintes brunes, jaunes et noires (dernière photo). Tout cela lui est très utile, car lorsqu'elle se sent menacée, elle se baisse parmi les feuilles mortes et se camoufle parfaitement. Selon la liste rouge des espèces menacées de l’UICN, elle est classée en catégorie de préoccupation mineure.

“Rana vaquita” (Edalorhina perezi), this frog with long "eyelashes" has a very curious body. Its belly is smooth with black and white spots (like a cow, hence its common name), although it also has some yellow in the groin area. Its back is flattened and much less smooth than the belly, with shades of brown, yellow, and black primarily (last photo). All of this is very useful to her; when she feels threatened, she crouches among the leaves and camouflages perfectly. According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, it is listed as of least concern.

Il m'aura fallu 10 ans pour le voir !
J'en ai rêve des années et voilà un rêve devenu réalité. Durant les fêtes de fin d'année, direction Saül pour une espèce en particulier, la couleuvre corail (Rhinobothryum lentiginosum). Après des années d'errance avec seulement quelques très rares observation, ce serpent semble de nouveau actif ces derniers mois. Ça n'a pas loupé après une randonnée de 14 km en forêt la nuit, cette beauté m'est passée devant ! 😍 🐍
Je fais dorénavant partie du (très) rare club des personnes ayant vu les deux espèces Rhinobothryum de cette planète 😜
PS : C'est faux corail, ce serpent est une couleuvre inoffensive !

It took me 10 years to see it!
I’ve dreamt of it for years, and now a dream has come true. During the holiday season, I headed to Saül for one species in particular, the coral snake (Rhinobothryum lentiginosum). After years of wandering with only a few very rare sightings, this snake seems to be active again in recent months. Sure enough, after a 14 km hike in the forest at night, this beauty crossed right in front of me! 😍 🐍
I’m now part of the (very) rare club of people who have seen both species of Rhinobothryum on this planet 😜

Il est difficile d’imaginer une telle densité d’espèces et d’individus en seulement quelques heures, en plein cœur de la forêt. Autour des points d’eau temporaires, des centaines d’amphibiens se rassemblent pour un unique événement : leur reproduction, qui ne dure qu’une nuit. Ce phénomène, appelé "explosive breeding", est aussi fascinant qu’éphémère.
📸 Sur la photo, principalement des Rainettes de Leprieur (Osteocephalus leprieurii), témoins de cette incroyable effervescence nocturne.

It’s hard to imagine such a high density of species and individuals in just a few hours, deep in the heart of the forest. Around temporary water bodies, hundreds of amphibians gather for a single event: their reproduction, which lasts only one night. This phenomenon, known as "explosive breeding," is as fascinating as it is fleeting.

Un classique du Chocó équatorien, la magnifique Boana picturata. Une Boana particulièrement grande, d’environ 10 cm. On a galéré à trouver le premier individu (en limite d’aire), mais finalement, on a pu en voir une bonne dizaine en deux nuits !

La plus difficile à voir est sans aucun doute la Rainette métronome (Trachycephalus hadroceps), pourtant très commune sur l'ensemble du bloc forestier, elle chante en canopée entre 20 et 40 mètres de hauteur.
